About Vietnam Vision Project
A report from the Health Ministry of Vietnam in 2001 revealed that 463,552 people were suffering from bilateral blindness and 889,276 people had blindness in one eye. Cataract is the major cause of blindness in people over 50 and usually affects both eyes (60.9%). The other main causes are diseases behind the lens, such as in the retina or optic nerves (14.38%), glaucoma (5.4%) and trachoma (4.9%)
The majority of the blind live in rural areas and are poor. Despite a lot of effort in the treatment and prevention of blindness, together with the help from overseas medical missions and charitable organisations, blindness is still a major problem in Vietnam.
Vietnam Vision Inc. is an organisation comprising of many volunteers who are practicing medicine, optometry, pharmacy and other professional fields. Its aim is to reduce blindness from cataracts in the disadvantaged areas of Vietnam by utilising the skills, experience and advanced technologies from Australia.
